Settling In

We’ve been in the new place for a little over a month now, and I feel like overall everyone is settling in really well!  Maybe my trainer thinks differently, but I’m happily oblivious over here. #ammyadult

Things I love:

  1. The fact that the whole barn is “easily sealed” up – we’ve been having horrible cold weather again, and this place does a nice job of keeping everything sealed up and warmer on the inside.
  2. The office is cute, well kept, and has a chalkboard wall.
  3. The office has a TV to entertain errant toddlers if need be.
  4. The bathroom is big enough to change your clothes in comfortably, and heated.
  5. The stalls seem to have really awesome “footing” including matts, shavings etc.
  6. Our new outdoor is right behind the barn.
  7. The pasture ponies (on turnout 24/7) are so much closer to the main barn, it’s a much nicer walk to retrieve them.
  8. The ground around the stable is well kept and even so you can pretty much ride anywhere on property.
  9. The arena footing is well kept and the lesson schedules don’t seem to be too crazy.

Things I don’t love yet:

  1. Tacking up in the aisle.  I know, I’m real spoiled and used to my crossties.  I’ll adapt.
  2. I don’t know where any of the light switches are.
  3. Not being able to slide between tractor and stall walls while the stalls are being cleaned.  I mainly blame my belly on this one, but it is a tight fit!

Overall I’ve been so impressed with what I’ve seen, and I even dragged my daughter out there a few times and it hasn’t been a total disaster.  In fact I appreciate the slightly smaller barn while trying to deal with her and horses at the same time.  I cannot wait to be a more full time rider out there this summer, but until then I’m making great use of the bleachers and sitting on the big red schoolhorse.

Pictures of a few things!

The indoor arena is really bright (2 year old for size comparison)
Awesome round pen modeled by the resident driving pony.
A few of the turnout pens (and second small round pen), plus behind them a huge open field for riding.
Maybe 2/3 of our really nice outdoor (which we’ve only been able to use like 3 days so far – so cold here), the rest is blocked by the barn so not in picture.
Tolerant barn cats. This one is a super lovey purring head butter. Except my child head butts them back.

  1. it looks wonderful! i love that the barn can be easily sealed up against the cold too – my current barn is very open, and while charlie’s tucked away in a warm corner, all my stuff freezes constantly. i also love the friendly barn cats <3 all of ours are like… basically feral lol

    1. Our last place had tons of space, but that is kind of a hard thing to manage in the nasty cold. Definitely liking this option better right now!

  2. Wow, looks like a great barn overall. Love that big indoor. It would take some getting used to tacking in isle, its a big faux pas at our barn.

    1. Glad I’m not the only one; since I’ve been with this group we haven’t really done it…and it’s just new to figure out how to best fit everyone during busy times. But we’re smart, we’ll figure it out eventually!

  3. It looks really nice! Your indoor actually looks really similar to ours, minus the shavings mountain. I love how well massive garage-style doors do at insulating (although I don’t love how obnoxious they are to lift) Def jealous of the concrete aisles – ours are stupid and dirt. Can’t wait to see more pictures of it as the weather gets nicer!
